Venice Commission

The European Commission for Democracy through Law - better known as the Venice Commission – is the Council of Europe´s advisory body on constitutional matters. Its role is to provide legal advice to its member-states and promote human rights and the rule of law. The Commission is composed of independent experts named by their governments for a period of four years. The experts hold plenary sessions in which they approve opinions, formulate recommendations, exchange information, and share good practices.

The Supreme Court and the Electoral Tribunal of Mexico participate in this forum by attending plenary sessions, submitting legal opinions on consultations presented by other member states, and through the World Conference on Constitutional Justice, in which the Venice Commission serves as Secretary.

The Venice Commission also manages the CODICES database, in which summaries of judgments from Constitutional Courts around the world can be found in English and French.
