World Conference on Constitutional Justice

This forum brings together Constitutional and Supreme Courts from around the world with the objective of facilitating and promoting a dialogue between constitutional judges from various countries. The World Conference aims to reflect about concepts, principles, and issues related to constitutional justice – understood as constitutional review for the protection of human rights – as a key element for the protection of democracy and the rule of law.

In January of 2009, the Venice Commission organized the first congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice, which was held in Cape Town, South Africa. Its objective was to establish the Conference as a permanent body at an international level, in order to bring together different regional groups of Constitutional Courts and its members. Amongst such groups is the Ibero-American Judicial Summit, of which Mexico is a party-member. During this first congress, the Venice Commission, as the Secretary of the new body, urged party-members to develop instruments that would enable the exchange of information and experiences on constitutional matters. For example, the database CODICES.
